SOMA Foundation Virtual Trivia Night

During our virtual Summer Leadership Conference, the SOMA Foundation hosted a virtual trivia night! Topics included: Movies & More, SOMA & Science, Netflix & Chill. There was definitely some competition as 4 teams battled against one another! Although we currently can't meet in person, we had a great time seeing everyone virtually and catching up. Thank you to all of you that attended!
Recap: Summer Virtual Community Outreach Events

Throughout the months of June and July, SOMA and SOMAF hosted a virtual blood drive, encouraging students and their family and friends to donate blood. We had 30 people pledge to donate. Each donation can potentially save up to 3 lives, therefore, we helped save up to 90 lives!
During our virtual Summer Leadership Conference, we partnered with Letters Against Isolation to send handwritten letters to quarantined seniors. We sent a total of 40 letters to facilities in 10 states across the United States, including Massachusetts, Washington, Indiana, California, Alabama, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Texas, and Nevada.
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our community service events!
Upcoming community service events:
SOMA and SOMAF are creating a team in the Run for Gus, a race to raise funds for pediatric brain cancer research.

SOMA Foundation Fall Community Outreach – Helping Up Missions
On Saturday, October 26th, 17 SOMA members volunteered at Helping Up Mission, a community focused on helping men and women fight addiction and homelessness. During our time on the men's campus, we were given a tour by some of the men involved in their one-year recovery program. We learned how they are supported in their efforts to re-engage the community and find freedom from their addictions through access to an on-campus barber shop, professional clothing, art studio, gym, library, counseling, medical attention, and spiritual development.
After the tour, we assembled 20 hygiene kits, 10 for men and 10 for women. Helping Up Mission is currently building a new facility for women and children, and we are proud to help support their efforts to serve the people of Baltimore!

SOMA Foundation Spring Service Event - Letter Making Campaign for Our Veterans
This past weekend, our SOMA Medical Students visited the veterans residing in the Community Living Center of Washington DC VA Medical Center to show our appreciation and gratitude of their service.
We were touched by the stories and smiles the veterans shared as we delivered our hand-written letters. The sacrifices made by these men and women have made the pursuit of our dreams possible and serve as an example of the type of dedication and care we seek to provide our patients as future osteopathic physicians.

SOMA Foundation Fall Service Event at OMED - Cooking Up Courage
SOMA Foundation and SOMA members are committed to making a difference in their community, so when former chef Andrea Weir, OMS II found out we were headed to San Diego, she put together an outreach event called Cooking Up Courage. Andrea established a partnership with the San Diego-based organization PATH (People Assisting The Homeless), an organization that helps people transition out of homelessness, and then recruited 30+ SOMA volunteers. Together they set to work bringing to life the Cooking Up Courage workshop.
The workshop had 3 goals: To create a nutritious and well-balanced meal for the 130+ residents of the PATH home, to teach osteopathic medical students about nutrition and how to council patients about eating healthy on a budget, and to encourage osteopathic medical students to implement the Cooking Up Courage workshop in their own communities.
If you are interested in learning more about Cooking Up Courage and the other community service events that SOMA members have participated in, please contact the SOMA Director of Community Outreach at communityoutreach@studentdo.org

SOMA Foundation Spring Service Event - Street Sense Media
Street Sense Media provides the homeless and disadvantaged community of Washington D.C. (known to the organization as "Vendors") a chance to economically provide themselves through selling newspapers formed from collaborated efforts between the Vendors and local journalists. Vendors are able to make 50-100 dollars daily through sales on the street to help them with housing and personal needs. Student leaders from multiple COMS came together to provide health and mental screenings to local Vendors, while also providing healthy snacks and haircuts. Taking the time to speak with members of the local communities really helped put the realities of clinical life in perspective for many learning student physicians,
This event was made possible by a generous donation of $300.00 from Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine - University of Pikesville to the SOMA Foundation. The money was in turn donated to Street Sense Media to help fund the event and provide nourishment to the members of the community who participated. We thank KYCOM-Pikesville for their donation and partnership in giving back to the community.

During her rotation, Student Doctor Jhun was able to " train as a healthcare advocate for whole-person healing [...] in the Asian-Pacific Islander communities of Westside Oahu, where cultural awareness is integral to positive healthcare outcomes." Alongside her attendings Drs. Terri Kakugawa, DO, and Dr. Mark Ferri, DO, Student Doctor Jhun participated with mobile Homeless Healthcare clinics, OMT clinics as an acting teaching assistant, and worked hard to improve the general well-being of the community around her.
The SOMA Foundation works hard to be able to provide scholarships for students like Student Doctor Juhn to broaden their experiences and become more well rounded, future physicians. We thank Dr. and Mrs. Loniewski for their continued support of the osteopathic student community and we look forward to seeing the continued success of Student Doctor Michelle Jhun. If you are interested in sponsoring current or new scholarships, please reach out to the Director of Scholarships and Grants (scholarships-grants@somafoundation.org).

Call for Nominations!!
The SOMA Foundation is proud to announce we are now accepting nominations for the
2018 George Northup, D.O. Educator of the Year
**The George W. Northup Educator of the Year Award was developed by the Student Osteopathic Medical Association in honor of George Northup, D.O. Dr. Northup acted as mentor to many osteopathic medical students throughout his career, often going above and beyond the call of duty to improve students' educational experiences. **
Each year, local SOMA chapters nominate a professor, dean, or faculty member from their osteopathic medical school who exemplifies the qualities of Dr. Northup. Nominees in the past have provided countless additional hours to students during exam preparation, have opened their homes to students, volunteered in the community, and acted as a friend when needed.
To nominate an outstanding educator who has made a difference on your campus, please submit one short essay (500 words or less) about your nominee along with his or her Curriculum Vitae to the SOMA Foundation Chairperson via the email address: Chairperson@studentdo.org by February 5th @ 11:59PM CST. Only one essay per candidate will be accepted.
Due to a significant number of highly qualified nominees, all submissions will be reviewed and 5 finalists will be selected by February 9th. The SOMA chapters who nominated one of these 5 finalists will then be asked to make a three minute video to present to the 2018 National SOMA House of Delegates (HOD) in March at the Spring Convention in Washington, D.C. The 2018-2019 chapter delegates will then select the 2018 George W. Northup Educator of the Year by ballot. The winning nominee will be recognized at the 2018 SOMA Foundation Fall Reception at OMED.
Questions can be directed to SOMA Foundation Chairperson Katherine Kirby (chairperson@studentdo.org)
Best of Luck to all who participate!
