Humanism in Medicine Scholarship
Sponsored by Thieme, the Humanism in Medicine Scholarship was created in remembrance of eight Osteopathic physicians who tragically lost their lives in the pursuit of improving patient care. This scholarship is a chance to highlight a student that exemplifies what it means to be an osteopathic physician. We look to award students who show compassion, leadership and enthusiasm for medicine, much like our fellow Osteopathic physicians who came before us, with this $1,000.00 award.
As the recipient of the Fall 2019 Humanism in Medicine scholarship for the SOMA foundation, I want to express my sincere thanks for your generous donation to the scholarship fund. It was truly unexpected to receive this award and I am both honored and humbled. Medicine is a dynamic specialty that demands clinical excellence, but it also requires a high degree of compassion. As students, we become so focused on the academics that we often lose sight of the humanism that drew us to this field. I believe that as physicians in training we have a responsibility to serve our community and especially those individuals who struggle to gain access to care. Humanism in medicine teaches us to be sensitive to the needs of our patients in regards to culture, socioeconomic status, and other social determents of health. It is foundational to our practice as osteopathic physicians and it is my goal to promote this philosophy in mentorship to younger students as well as in my future practice. I thank you again for your donation as it will help me pursue my dreams of providing compassionate, quality medical services to some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
