Mission & Vision

The Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) is the student branch of the American Osteopathic Association. SOMA is also the largest national organization dedicated to transforming motivated osteopathic medical students into dynamic physician-leaders who advance patient-centered care within the United States and abroad. SOMA is a nationally recognized pioneer
in physician leadership development, striving to secure a better future for healthcare in America through keen promotion of osteopathic philosophy, advancement of health education programs for the public, development of integrated programs to augment physician medical education, and avid support for unity within the healthcare continuum.

The SOMA Foundation works in conjunction with SOMA, collaborating in support of a common vision through sponsorship of philanthropy projects, community outreach, medical education, and student scholarships.

This year, through your generous donations to the SOMA Foundation, SOMA is launching valuable community outreach and public health education programs including an up-and-coming outreach project scheduled for this Spring in our nation's capital. Additionally, the SOMA Foundation is able to provide grants for local efforts put on by individual SOMA chapters across the country.

We are excited to announce that SOMA will be able to award more than a dozen scholarships this year to osteopathic medical students demonstrating leadership, initiative, and academic excellence. Furthermore, SOMA will be funding travel for a limited number of students wishing to expand their horizons by scheduling elective clinical rotations in remote, rural areas from Appalachia to Alaska.

At the core of our philanthropic efforts is our SOMA Unity service project. Annually since 2005, SOMA has hosted a large-scale volunteer project in which students from osteopathic medical schools across the nation assemble to participate. From joining forces with the local relief teams in New Orleans to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, to providing healthcare education in the homeless shelters of New York City, to putting smiles on the faces of children fighting life-threatening illness with the Make A Wish Foundation, in Kissimmee Florida, SOMA members are making a real difference in the lives of the people who need it the most. Thanks to the generosity of the American Osteopathic Foundation, this year's philanthropy project held at Give Kids the World Village in Association with the Make A Wish Foundation in December was a stunning success and a true testament to our organization's mission.

The functioning of SOMA relies heavily on your generosity. I thank you for visiting our website and encourage you to contact me with any further questions regarding the SOMA Foundation.

Thank you for your kindness.

Sincerely,

Michael Dominello, OMS-IV
