Our Mission & Vision

The Foundation works in conjunction with the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA), collaborating in support of a common vision through sponsorship of philanthropy projects, research initiatives, community outreach, medical education, and student scholarships. SOMA is the largest national organization dedicated to transforming motivated osteopathic medical students into dynamic health-care leaders who advance patient-centered health care within the United States and abroad.

Community Outreach & Unity at Home

Every year, generous donations from our members make community outreach and public health education projects possible during SOMA's fall and spring conventions. At the core of the Foundation's philanthropic efforts is the SOMA Unity Project. Annually since 2005, SOMA has hosted a large-scale volunteer project every year in which students from osteopathic medical schools across the nation assemble to participate in a unified effort of community service. The Foundation has partnered with the American Osteopathic Foundation for SOMA's Regional Unity Project, sending students on the AOF Human Touch Leadership Project. Past Unity Projects include working with local relief teams in New Orleans to help rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, putting smiles on the faces of children fighting life-threatening illness with the Make A Wish Foundation in Kissimmee, FL, to providing holiday cheer at both the Phoenix, AZ and Camden, NJ Ronald McDonald House of Charities, which serve as a “home away from home” for the family members of children who are being treated at nearby hospitals.

And Abroad...

The Foundation is also a founding member of DOCARE’s first Continuity of Care Clinic in San Andres Itzapa, Guatemala. This new resource for adventurous osteopathic medical students serves as a continuous opportunity to gain invaluable clinical experience while providing medical care to a neglected part of the world.
